Thanks to the Kimberley Digital Discovery Program, children in some of Western Australia’s most remote communities are building digital skills with confidence.

Delivered by the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley across Kununurra, Kalumburu, Wyndham and Doon Doon, the program responded to a clear need. In the East Kimberley, geographic isolation and limited access to services mean many families have had little exposure to digital technology. Yet digital access now underpins education, employment, health, safety and disaster preparedness, particularly relevant in regions prone to cyclones, flooding and extreme weather.
With $10,000 from Telstra’s Connected Communities grant program, the Shire created a portable “tech kit” designed for remote delivery. Packed into a heavy-duty travel case, the kit included iPads, tablets, coding and STEM tools, and interactive educational technology. Funding also supported flights to communities such as Kalumburu, ensuring sessions could be delivered face-to-face and tailored to each community’s age groups, learning levels and cultural context.
Students who had never used this kind of technology quickly grew in confidence and capability. Teachers reported high levels of engagement, with some students completing an hour-long learning plan in just 15 minutes. The program showed how technology can level the playing field, particularly for children who may struggle with traditional literacy and numeracy tasks.
Families were part of the journey too. At one school, parents, aunties, uncles and grandparents turned out in large numbers to see what students had created
Key outcomes of the project included:
- Rapid growth in digital confidence and skills
- Early exposure to coding and STEM learning
- Increased school readiness and engagement
- Stronger family involvement
- Safer, more responsible use of technology
The program also reinforced the importance of flexibility when working in remote communities. Sessions were adapted to local needs and this responsiveness was key to building trust and strong community buy-in.
As the program team reflected, they were “so proud of the clever kids we met, and their willingness to dive right into this new tech.”
In communities where distance can limit opportunity, the Kimberley Digital Discovery Program is helping ensure children are better equipped to learn, connect and participate.
